After a single tiger sighting in 2012-2013, the Goa forest department did not report any for the next few years until 2016. Now, there have been six tiger sightings in the past 3 months. A total of 20 tiger sightings were reported in Goa in 2021-2022. This is the highest number of tiger sightings recorded in Goa since the use of camera traps began.

Scientists have used a relatively new method 'Spatial Presence-Absence Model' to calculate the population and density of Asiatic black bears. This technique does not require identifying individual animals. Instead, it bases the estimation using the number of camera trap captures and the number of black bears seen in the buffer of a camera trap. They estimated 11 individuals in Daranghati and two in Rupi Bhaba.

Scientists from ATREE published a new study that revealed the overlap of human activities with wildlife activities in Protected Areas of the Eastern Ghats. This is a potential risk for increased human-wildlife conflict. The study shows that activities such as hunting and forest produce collection are interfering with the temporal activity patterns of wildlife, particularly herbivores.

A road for a port cuts through the livelihoods of fisherwomen in Uttara Kannada | Mongabay
A four-kilometre-long road is being constructed in Kasarkod-Tonka as a part of the Honnavar port project. Its site comes under the 'No Development Zone' of India’s coastal regulation norms. With over 2700 forest fire incidents recorded this year, Himachal Pradesh's local economy is under pressure. Three forest officers lost their lives within the year, and 23,000 hectares of forest were affected. Forest officers cite dry weather, human negligence and wilful destruction as causes, while local people believe that large scale development projects are tampering with local ecology.
