Smuggling of Exotic and Endangered Species From Myanmar Increasing

Exotic and endangered species are the latest in the list of items being smuggled from Myanmar into India, evidenced by seizures at regular intervals across different states in the country. The species that have been confiscated so far range from pangolins to chimpanzees. Wildlife is mostly smuggled through the border states of Mizoram and Manipur in the Northeast, India’s frontier region. This zone has a 1,643-kilometer border with Myanmar, most of which is hilly and porous.

Four new corals recorded from Indian waters

Scientists have recorded four species of azooxanthellate corals for the first time from Indian waters. These new corals were found from the waters of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Azooxanthellate corals are a group of corals that do not contain zooxanthellae and derive nourishment not from the sun but from capturing different forms of plankton. These groups of corals are deep-sea representatives, with the majority of species reporting from between 200 m to 1000 m. Their occurrences are also reported from shallow coastal waters.

Survey may reveal new elephant corridors in TN

TN has 17 designated elephant corridors as per the last edition of “Right of Passage” published in 2017 by the environment ministry. Many more new corridors may emerge in the latest survey as some old corridors have been fragmented due to land-use change and elephant herds tend to find new routes in their home range.

Leopard rescued by forest officials after it fell into open well in Maharashtra

There have been many instances when wild animals wander into human dwellings and have to be rescued by the forest department. Sometimes animals also fall into open wells and are unable to get out of them. Recently a leopard was rescued by the forest officials after it fell into an open well in Maharashtra. Netizens praised the actions of the forest officials in rescuing the wild animal.
