Mumbai: WCS-India researcher Nikit Surve has been awarded the Maha Mumbai Tarun Bharat Green Avengers Award 2019. He was felicitated during a program ‘Green Idea 2019’ organized by Mumbai Tarun Bharat, a Marathi newspaper. The award was granted in recognition of his work in the field of environment protection and conservation on the occasion of WorldEnvironmentDay.
Working on human leopard interactions in and around Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali, Nikit who completed his Master’s from the Wildlife Institute of India, has been working with the park authorities in understanding leopard behaviour. His work using camera traps across 120 square kilometres of the park and adjoining areas has helped establish the high number of leopards living in the area. It has showed how the felines have adapted to live in close proximity to humans while avoiding encounters. The project has also been instrumental in helping to train forest staff in the use of field equipment and monitoring.
