efforts towards providing COVID-19 relief materials for forest communities continues with the distribution of relief material and sensitization of communities in Kawal.
Distribution of masks in Kawal
The WCS team has started distributing 750 masks, covering three villages – Mysempet-Gondiguda, Mysempet-Naikapoduguda, and Rampur. Before the masks are distributed, a 45-minute interactive awareness session is conducted on symptoms of COVID-19, how masks can help, social-distancing, precautions to be taken when visiting markets and attending NREGAs, and toll free numbers to reach out to if anyone is suspected of having COVID-19. The villagers were also sensitized on the importance of reporting the infection immediately. The work will continue in eight more hamlets.
"The awareness levels about COVID-19 in tribal villages of Kawal is quite low. The healthcare is also poor. Hence, it is pertinent to keep forest communities safe from this novel virus. As the lockdowns are being relaxed they face the risk of exposure to the virus when they start daily wages or NREGAs work and visit local markets. Hence, WCS-India is working towards creating awareness about social distancing, hygiene and usage of masks." said Imran Siddiqui, Assistant Director – Conservation Science, WCS-India.

Masks and soaps were also distributed to Anti Poaching Watchers (APWs) at the Sathyamangalam Range office by Mr.Bernard, the Range Forest Officer.
