West Nusa Tenggara (Lesser Sunda Seascape)

Lesser Sunda eco-region which included in Coral Triangle is the highest biological diversity in the world and habitat for 76% coral reef species and 2,631 reef fish species. Lesser Sunda also a migration path of the Cetacean and six sea turtle species from Indian Ocean to Pacific Ocean.

Through support from Marine Protected Areas Governance (MPAG) and Margareth A. Cargill, WCS developed program in West Nusa Tenggara by supporting Marine and Fisheries Department of West Nusa Tenggara Province and local government. The aim is to achieve Government of Indonesia’s commitment to build Marine Protected Area (MPA) by 20 million hectare in 2020 and effectively manage it. WCS-IP also accompany the government in managing the fisheries resources in this area.

What We Do

WCS-IP started their work in West Nusa Tenggara in 2002. Through MPAG-USAID consortium, WCS-IP coached the management of Gili Meno, Ayer and Trawangan Marine Park. In 2013, WCS-IP expand their working area to West Lombok Regency, Central Lombok Regency and East Lombok Regency. In 2014, WCS-IP continued to expand to Great Sumbawa Regency and Sumbawa Regency. Eventually in 2015, WCS-IP has been covered more than 5 regencies in West Nusa Tenggara province, by adding Dompu and Bima Regency to the working area.

WCS-IP identified the potential location for the conservation area development, coaching the local for conservation area management, shark fisheries monitoring, and reef fish management development. In Gili Matra, we have initiated a Collaboration and Communication Gili Matra Forum, succession the Decree of Management and Zoning Planing of Gili Matra, and training workshop for integrated monitoring. Meanwhile in Gita Nada, Gili Sulat and Gili Lawang we have empowered the local community by inaugurating community group in order to engage them as integral part to save the marine ecosystem. Besides we also initiated institutionalization of shark fishermen and conducted profiling and data monitoring in shark and ray fisheries.
