Dr. Nigel Collar

Dr. Nigel Collar has graciously joined WCS-India as Honorary Scientific Advisor to the Great Indian Bustard project. He is a Leventis Fellow in conservation biology with BirdLife International, where he has previously worked as the Director of Science, Director of Development, Chairman of the ICBP Bustard Group and the compiler of the International Bird Red Data Book. His current work involves studying threatened birds and habitats through fieldwork.
Dr. Nigel has written more than 100 scientific papers and 12 books including ‘Birds and people: bonds in a timeless journey’, ‘Facing extinction: the world’s rarest birds and the race to save them’ and ‘Handbook of the birds of the world’.
His love for birds brought him to the world of threatened bustards, and for more than the last four decades since then, he has worked extensively on numerous conservation projects to protect bustards and other birds all over the world. Dr. Nigel’s contribution towards developing the IUCN Red List criteria to assess the status of threatened species has been instrumental. He also has a doctorate degree in English Literature from the University of East Anglia.
