Conservation Challenges

Amazonian Turtles

Due to the drastic decline in Amazonian river turtles, over the last 35 years or more innumerable conservation projects have been set up, with the objective of protecting key nesting sites and preserving existing population stocks. However, the efforts in terms of research, management and conservation of the natural populations are not enough to maintain turtle stocks.

This is probably due to the great scale of the Amazon, lack of political will, and the lack of good studies showing which techniques are most effective and important for conservation and management oft he species.

Current projects tend to focus their activities only on monitoring nesting beaches, and unfortunately, despite many years of continuous study and some positive results, this is not sufficiently effective to conserve river turtles and stop the ongoing decline in populations.
