Abstract
Troglodytism (cave-dwelling) appears to be rare among
crocodilians, having been reported for only four of 23 (17.3%)
extant species (reviewed by Soomaweera et al. 2014. Rec. West.
Austr. Mus. 29:82–81). Nile Crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus),
Dwarf Crocodiles (Osteolaemus sp.), and Australian Freshwater
Crocodiles (C. johnstoni) are known to inhabit waterbodies in
caves (Wilson 1987. Cave Science 14:107–111; Soomaweera et
al., op. cit.), and False Gharial (Tomistoma schlegelii) trackways
have been found entering caves (Steubing et al. 2004. Crocodile
Specialist Group Newsletter 23:11–12). We here report an observation
of troglodytism by C. moreletii at a cave in northern Belize.
