The number of orangutans in Sarawak's Ulu Sungai Menyang special conservation area has increased over the last decade, based on the latest population assessment carried out this year. The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) said the survey, conducted by the WWF-Malaysia terrestrial mammals team in Sarawak, estimated the orangutan population at around 167 individuals, compared to about 115 recorded in 2014.Despite the positive trajectory, SFC said challenges remained, as the Bornean orangutan remained listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature."This encouraging indication reflects the impact of our sustained management efforts and strong collaboration with the state Forest Department, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Malaysia, Borneo Adventure, WWF-Malaysia and local communities.

MALAYSIA'S wildlife is being slowly hunted to extinction. Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), the local chapter of an international organisation headquartered in New York, named poaching as the main reason for the decline in the population of the tiger and its prey species.Last month, the WCS estimated that Peninsular Malaysia needs at least 5,000 rangers to curb the surge in poaching. If Sabah and Sarawak, two states that are heavily forested are included, the number of rangers needed would certainly be higher.Based on its experience, the conservation body said that every 100 sq km required at least 10 rangers to monitor, detect and deter poachers. We just don't have enough, even with volunteers signing up.In a survey conducted in 2020, there were fewer than 150 tigers roaming our jungles, a sharp decline from the 3,000 estimated seven decades ago.

For two years, Malaysian conservationists tracked a tiger named “Bulan” as she raised four cubs. Then a fatal traffic accident made her another statistic in the country’s dwindling population.Malaysia’s national animal is in trouble.Poaching, food loss and diminishing habitat have slashed the population from 3,000 in the 1950s to less than 150 roaming free today, according to official estimates. The government said last month it was ramping up efforts to combat wildlife crime, introducing AI-enabled camera traps and methods to detect smuggling at airports. But experts and officials admit that resources fall far short of what is needed to protect the country’s famed big cat, listed as critically endangered.

Bringing back the roar: A decade of tiger conservation lessons

There was a time when the Malayan tiger’s roar echoed across Malaysia’s forests. Those roars have slowly diminished, silenced by snares. Fewer than 150 Malayan tigers now remain in the wild, a stark reminder that our national icon could vanish within our lifetime. But there is still hope. The Belum-Temengor Forest Complex in northern Peninsular Malaysia, one of the last remaining strongholds for the species, continues to show signs of life.Camera traps have captured images of several individual tigers, rangers report tiger footprints and evidence of cubs has been documented in recent years. These fragments of hope remind us that the Malayan tiger can recover — if the right actions are sustained and scaled.Over the past decade, unprecedented collaboration between conservationists, government agencies, indigenous communities and the private sector has helped protect this landscape.Thousands of snares have been removed, patrols have multiplied and cover tens of thousands of kilometres, and Orang Asli communities have become effective stewards of the forest. These combined efforts have not only supported tigers, but also safeguarded elephants, hornbills, tapirs and countless other species that share their habitat. One of the clearest lessons from the past decade is that no single organisation or sector alone can save the Malayan tiger. Conservation is inherently collaborative and requires a whole-of-society approach.“Collaboration is key, and we must all work together even more strongly to ensure that the Malayan tiger not only survives but thrives in its natural habitat. The support from Perhilitan, the Perak State Parks Corporation (PSPC), the Peninsular Malaysia Forestry Department and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) — such as RIMAU, the Wildlife Conservation Society, Pelindung and Traffic, Panthera and Mycat — and all our donors has been invaluable in these efforts. Together, we have made significant strides, but there is still much to be done,” says Sophia Lim, CEO and executive director at WWF-Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia does not need to reinvent the wheel in reversing the decline of the Malayan tiger — of which only about 150 remain in the wild — a conservation group said.Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Malaysia, the local chapter of the New York-based organisation, said Nepal and India have proven that the world's largest big cat can be saved. Its country director, Dr Mark Rayan Darmaraj, said the National Tiger Conservation Task Force's (MyTTF) 10-year plan offered promise, but success was far from assured. He said Nepal and India's successes stemmed from unwavering national commitment at the highest level, with their prime ministers personally leading the charge.

KUALA LUMPUR: At least 5,000 wildlife rangers are needed to patrol habitats in Peninsular Malaysia, a conservation group said.Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Malaysia, the local chapter of an international organisation headquartered in New York, added that more personnel were essential to curb poaching, a major factor in the decline of tigers and their prey species. Its country director, Dr Mark Rayan Darmaraj, said poaching had escalated sharply in recent decades. "Prior to two decades ago, there were only isolated incidences of snaring. Since then, thousands of snares have been detected in our forests. Massive snaring by locals and Indochinese poachers can wipe out tigers and other large mammals within a short time."Darmaraj said tigers required large prey, such as sambar deer, to thrive. However, the deer population has dwindled due to local hunting, further contributing to the Malayan Tiger's decline. The key issue, he said, was that Malaysia simply did not have enough frontline rangers."A minimum of 10 rangers for every 100sq km is needed to monitor, detect and deter poachers."This translates to at least 5,000 rangers for Peninsular Malaysia.

This Malaysia Day, our national celebration has been marred by the shocking news of suspects caught with a tiger carcass hidden in the boot of a vehicle in Mersing, Johor. The sight of our majestic national animal stuffed into a garbage bag, destined for transport and trade, is both sickening and heartbreaking. It is a dreadful reminder that poaching remains a grave threat to tigers and other wildlife in our country. The Wildlife Conservation Society Malaysia (WCS Malaysia) commends the swift action of the Royal Malaysia Police Federal Reserve Unit Intelligence Team and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Johor in intercepting the suspects, who were found in possession of the tiger believed to have been snared and shot. This interception was reportedly made possible by a public tip-off, a reminder of the critical role Malaysians can play in combating wildlife crime by reporting suspicious activities. The dead tiger had previously been recorded in the Endau Rompin landscape alongside its mother and sibling, a rare and precious glimpse into the fragile family units that are vital for the species’ recovery.

WWF-Malaysia is appalled by the discovery of a Malayan tiger carcass in Johor, with three individuals arrested in connection with this heinous crime on Malaysia Day.The Malayan tiger is not only a critically endangered species - with fewer than 150 left in the wild - but also our national icon.To have one snared and gunned down on the very day Malaysians honour the formation of our nation is nothing short of tragic and shameful. It is a crime against our ecosystem and against the spirit of our nation. We are outraged that while so much effort and sacrifice go into protecting the Malayan tiger, poachers still brazenly snuff out this majestic creature for mere temporary gain.

Fewer than 150 Malayan tigers remain in their home range of Peninsular Malaysia. Poaching to supply an illegal trade in their body parts is a major threat to the survival of this critically endangered subspecies of tiger, Panthera tigris jacksoni. A new study details a link between the trafficking of people and Malayan tiger parts: Vietnamese migrant workers in Malaysia, indebted to their employers, often turn to the illegal wildlife trade, while network managers and vessel captains use fishing boats to smuggle tiger parts to Vietnam. The study, published in January in the journal Trends in Organized Crime, drew on six months of interviews with 53 people familiar with fishing-boat smuggling routes and wildlife trade networks between Malaysia and Vietnam. These individuals included poachers, transporters, brokers, wildlife traders and consumers who purchased the final products. Tiger skins, bones and other body parts are trafficked for traditional medicine and ornaments. Bones are particularly coveted for unproven treatment of ailments like joint pain, epilepsy and sexual performance issues.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- The Malayan Tiger has long been celebrated as a national symbol of strength and power in Malaysia, proudly gracing the nation’s coat of arms, royal insignia, and other emblems of authority.Yet, despite its revered status, the Malayan Tiger faces an uncertain future. The tiger’s presence may soon be confined to cultural symbols and the nickname of the national football team as the species battles against escalating threats to its survival. The preliminary results from Malaysia’s first National Tiger Survey, conducted between 2016 and 2020, reveal a dramatic decline in the country’s tiger population. The survey conducted by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, WWF-Malaysia and various NGOs, found that fewer than 150 tigers remained in Peninsular Malaysia by 2022.This is a sharp drop from the previous estimate of 250-340 tigers. This alarming decline is even more striking when compared to the 1950s, when Malaysia was believed to have a thriving population of around 3,000 tigers. The Malayan tiger is now classified as Critically Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. This means it has an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.

Anggaran populasi harimau Malaya pada 1950-an dipercayai sekitar 3,000 ekor.

Taman Negara, Peninsular Malaysia’s premier national park, is celebrated for its extraordinary biodiversity centered around a 130-million-year-old tropical rainforest that’s believed to be the world’s oldest. Within it, a remarkable variety of plants and animals take shelter. However, this wealth of wildlife has also made it a target for traffickers, disrupting the park’s delicate ecosystem.A recent analysis by wildlife trade monitoring group TRAFFIC revealed that at least 28 seizure incidents involving wild animals occurred within 30 kilometers (19 miles) of Taman Negara between 2019 and 2024. TRAFFIC data showed that the most-seized parts by volume were from sun bears (Helarctos malayanus), leopards (Panthera pardus) and pangolins (Manis javanica) — species classified as threatened on the IUCN Red List and banned for commercial trade.

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 15): There have been over 57,000 human-wildlife conflict reports over the past five years, which is a 40% increase from the previous five years, said Ahmad Afandi, fellow at Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia, at the “Exploring pathways towards human-wildlife co-existence in Malaysia” panel at the PRAXIS 2024 conference. These conflicts involve a wide range of species, from small animals to large mammals, and have resulted in significant losses, injuries and fatalities.Addressing human-wildlife conflict requires an approach that involves collaboration among government agencies, non-governmental organisations, local communities, and the private sector, said speakers during session. This is to strengthen policy implementation, improve capacity building and raise awareness.

THE Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) is an iconic species, revered in many cultures across Asia. In Malaysia, these majestic creatures hold a special place in the ecosystem and cultural heritage.Tomorrow, we celebrate World Elephant Day to raise awareness about on the critical role elephants play in the ecosystems and the threats they face. This day serves as a call to advocate for stronger conservation policies and initiatives. It's also a time to celebrate the beauty, intelligence, and social structure of these magnificent creatures. At the beginning of the 20th century, more than 100,000 Asian elephants may have existed. Today, the total is not known, but it has been roughly estimated that there are between 30,000 and 50,000 Asian elephants remaining, as opposed to 10 times as many African elephants.

EVERY year, on July 29, the world comes together to celebrate Global Tiger Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about tiger conservation. Among the various subspecies of tigers, the Malayan tiger, known scientifically as Panthera tigris jacksoni, stands as a symbol of both beauty and tragedy in the wild.Native to Peninsular Malaysia, this majestic creature is facing a severe threat to its existence, highlighting the urgent need for concerted conservation efforts. The Malayan tiger, a symbol of strength and majesty, is deeply embedded in our country's national identity. It prominently features in the country's coat of arms (jata negara), where two tigers flank the shield, representing courage and resilience. This regal animal also appears in various emblems of government institutions and sporting teams, underscoring its significance as a national icon.Despite this profound cultural reverence, the Malayan tiger faces the grim reality of potential extinction. Rampant deforestation, poaching and human-wildlife conflicts have decimated their population, highlighting a stark irony: while the Malayan tiger is celebrated as a proud emblem of the nation, it remains critically endangered and struggles for survival in the wild.

Kuala Lumpur: Mungkinkah spesies Harimau Malaya pupus sepenuhnya 20 tahun lagi ? Nasib malang sama pernah dialami spesies badak sumbu Sumatera, badak sumbu Jawa, Merak hijau, burung white- shouldered ibis, bangau keria (sarus crane) dan serati hutan.

A recent spate of alarming deaths has heightened fears for the Malayan tiger, wildlife authorities and conservationists say, with some calling the threat to Malaysia’s emblematic animal a “national emergency.”Native to the jungles of peninsular Malaysia, the majestic feline subspecies is critically endangered, with fewer than 150 believed to be left in the wild due to habitat loss, illegal poaching and a decline in prey.Found on Malaysia’s coat of arms and considered a national heritage symbol, its numbers have plummeted since the 1950s, when around 3,000 roamed the Southeast Asian country, officials say.

IPOH, July 10 — The roadkill death of a Malayan tiger last week was the fourth involving the endangered species in nine months, raising concerns over the conservation of the animals on the brink of extinction. The Malaysia Nature Society (MNS) said that the country could entirely lose the species, which could now number fewer than 150, within a decade without drastic measures to mitigate their loss of habitat to development.“Tigers need a huge space to roam. When their habitat is encroached, it would affect their food source forcing them to come out to search for food,” its executive director Shanmugaraj Subramaniam said.Meanwhile, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Malaysia Program country director Dr Mark Rayan Darmaraj said a contributing factor was the declines in the wild boar population to African Swine Fever and deer to poaching.

Saving wildlife: what road planning needs beyond viaducts

KUALA LUMPUR – Installing wildlife crossings is not the only solution to reducing wildlife-related roadkill, environmentalists say.Speaking to Scoop recently, Wildlife Conservation Society Malaysia Programme country director Mark Rayan Darmaraj expressed the necessity of conducting a thorough survey on wildlife zones and the need to construct suitable wildlife crossings before implementing such measures.“First and foremost, in relation to new roads being built, the best thing we can do is to make sure that we don’t fragment contiguous forested areas and should align or realign roads to avoid bisecting these areas. “If there is absolutely no way to prevent this infrastructure from bisecting these forested areas, then allocating and incorporating enough budget to identify locations and enabling as many wildlife crossings to be built to facilitate safer movement for wildlife to cross roads needs to be prioritised. “So, there is definitely value in constructing wildlife crossings, which are also called viaducts, if they are well-planned and the location is based on data on wildlife presence or movement,” he said.
