Pre-Deployment Trainings

Training programs for the military remain an effective way to communicate about the issues of wildlife trade.  We have examples of wildlife products and a variety of presentation materials to use in our training programs.

WCS conducted pre-deployment presentations for Fort Drum soldiers departing for Iraq and Afghanistan. This includes a 45-minute lecture and time for question and answers.

WCS provided a presentation and brought examples of wildlife trade products to an environmental science class at West Point. The presentation included a focus on relating the issue of Wildlife Trade to Biodiversity, Wetlands, and Endangered Species, all topics covered in that course.

WCS participated in the Sustaining Military Readiness Conference in August 2009. We brought examples of wildlife trade projects and a poster describing results of our research at Fort Drum and in Afghanistan. The poster won first place for “Most Informative.”

Since 2008, WCS has participated in the annual Fort Drum Safety Day in Northern New York where soldiers visit booths and learn about how to remain safe while serving. We bring examples of wildlife products and presentation materials about biodiversity in Iraq and Afghanistan.

These training programs are already complete, but if you are interested in arranging a training program with us, please contact us at wcswildlifetrade@wcs.org and provide your location, contact information, and specific details about your interest in a training program.
