RFP Application Guidelines and Procedures

Introduction
Please read the following guidelines before submitting an application. The RFP application can be downloaded from the link at the bottom of the page.
Overview
Proposals are submitted in a standard format for two annual cycles with deadlines on March 15 and September 15, with projects lasting a duration of no longer than one year. Grants are for up to $25,000, with the average grant being $10,655. Proposals must be independent of ongoing projects and programs of any of the Conservation Leadership Programme partner organizations. Staff of the BirdLife International Secretariat, Conservation International, Fauna & Flora International, and the Wildlife Conservation Society are ineligible to apply. For the September 2008 deadline, we are accepting applications from nationals of the following countries only:
Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Libya, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Russia, Trinidad & Tobago, Turkey, and Venzuela
Restrictions
Please consider the following restrictions before submitting your proposal:

Organizations are not eligible for funding.

There may be only one Principle Investigator (PI).

Faculty and/or research advisors should not be listed as the PI unless they plan to conduct the majority of the fieldwork.

The PI must write the proposal. Applications written on behalf of another individual are not allowed.

Translation by a third party is permitted, however, applications are accepted in English, French and Spanish only. In addition, the abstract must be written in English.

Previous research fellows are not eligible to apply for another RFP.

Proposals must be independent of ongoing WCS projects and programs.
The RFP does not support:

Conference attendance

Expeditions

Travel to scientific meetings

Legal actions
-
Construction of permanent field stations

Tuition expenses
-
Salary for PI (though salary for field assistants is acceptable)

Overhead costs
-
Costly laboratory analyses

Gene storage
-
Vehicle purchase
-
Computer purchase
-
Captive breeding
While salaries for PIs are not supported, PIs who have no other source of support may request modest per-diem expenses. Proposals may be submitted simultaneously to other funding organizations but WCS must be informed of the organization, the amount requested, and status. Please clearly indicate in the budget which component you request WCS to fund and which is requested from other organizations.
Application Directions
We require that you submit your proposal in electronic format via this website. The electronic version should be a single document in MS Word. Name your file with your last name, the country of research, and the RFP cycle (2008September for the September deadline), separated by underscores. For example, if Jane Smith is submitting an application to do research in India for the September 15, 2008 deadline, the name of the file will be:
Smith_India_2008September.doc
Your proposal must include all items listed on the Project Outline (included with proposal coversheet at link below), and must have proposal sections numbered according to the Project Outline list. Make sure to also number the pages of your proposal.
Applications may be submitted in English, French, or Spanish; however, the coversheet and abstract must be in English.
